Well, it’s that time of the year again. Autumn; and as Emily Bronte said - Every leaf speaks bliss to me, Fluttering from the autumn tree. Which basically means; all the leaves are going to fall off the trees and block up your gutters necessitating the need for a thorough gutter cleaning. I know, not a very romantic look at life but definitely a realistic one.

Did you know that gutters were only invented in 1880 which makes them, and hence gutter cleaning, a relatively new invention. But one may ask…why bother? For what reason do we need to keep our gutters clean?

Well, the gutter is the section of your home's roofing assembly that is accountable for gathering rainwater and shifting it away from the home so that it does not cause damage. Without gutters, buildings would get damaged to the point that their longevity would be impaired. Not getting involved in some serious gutter cleaning would have the same effect as not having any gutters as their use would be impaired. Why? Because water would not be able to flow freely through the gutters and would end up soaking into the roof and walls. This can cause a lot more than simple cosmetic damage, it can also ruin the paint and the roof tiles. However, more importantly, it also rots the walls and this causes serious structural damage.

The problem with gutter cleaning is that, unless you have a strict rota for it, most folks only realize that their gutters need cleaning when they can actually see rainwater pouring out over the sides of the gutter and not through the downspout as it should. When a gutter overflows in this fashion it normally means that you need to get involved in some gutter cleaning. The gutters need to be cleaned to remove the build up of leaves and other organic rubbish. However, sometimes your gutter is not overflowing but there are still underlying problems such as seepage, rust, or structural problems that you cannot see from the ground. Also one must bear in mind that sometimes mere gutter cleaning may not be enough, the gutters may need to be re-aligned to make sure that they are at the right pitch to drain, they may have holes or even hidden brackets that have come loose. Because of this, you really should have a visual inspection, preferably by an expert, at least yearly. If you don’t then you do stand the chance of your gutters not serving its primary role of keeping your home safe from water damage.
