Speech Courses For Stuttering And Stammering

Mum, this speech impediment is really starting to get me down. I had a really bad day at school today; I was asked to read a paragraph out of a book in English. I was so nervous; I just wanted the ground to open up and to take me away. I just knew I would not be able to read the whole paragraph without stuttering and I had barely started when the struggles began. It was the third word, a word that starts with the letter "b". "B" words are without doubt the hardest for me to say and I often "trip up" on them. Upon hearing the fact that I had stuttered a number of people in the class started to laugh, this was not exactly a shock to me but was still rather upsetting. I really need help with this speech impediment, please will you try to find me some kind of stuttering therapy course for me to attend? I will have a look for you son, I will try my best to help you in any way that I can.

The above was part of a conversation that I had with my mother when I was aged fifteen. Going to school was proving to be quite troublesome as some of the other students were starting to bully and tease me due to the fact that I had a stutter. I did not want to have these speech difficulties for the rest of my life and this is why I was asking my mum for help.

Despite her best efforts my mother was unable to find a specialist speech course for stuttering and I had to continue to attend the more traditional speech and language therapy for the next couple of years. This was all happening in 1988, as I was born in 1973. Even writing those years down now just reminds me how long ago that was I suddenly feel rather old!

Move the clock forward to 2009 and the whole picture has changed some what and for the better. There are now specialist stuttering and stammering courses that enable people to receive expert help to achieve fluency. The courses which are run on a one-to-one basis are held over a two, three or five day period.
