Stuttering therapy

The speech impediment of stammering has been thrust into the news over recent years with famous people such as Gareth Gates bringing the subject to people's attention. There are numerous types of therapy for stammering and in this article I will be writing about the most popular and beneficial of these.

Stammering was to have a major impact on my own life as I had this form of speech impediment for eighteen years from the ages of four and twenty-two. It had a negative effect on my overall self-confidence and self-esteem. I was determined to not let the stammer to totally dictate my life as I fully aware that it had the power to do this. At times I thought that life as a hermit may not be too bad, I was after all able to speak perfectly well when talking to myself.

I eventually was able to overcome the stammer when I was in early twenties after a lot of hard work and determination. I have now been fluent for the last thirteen years.

As for the most beneficial types of stammering treatment programs these come in two forms. Firstly there are the group speech therapy courses which are normally held over a five-day period. Secondly and by far the most popular and beneficial are the specialised one-to-one stammering courses which are run by people who have previously had a stammer.

The sheer fact that the speech coach has had a stammer makes this course much more desirable as does the knowledge that they are on a one-to-one basis. There is also a continued after the course support service which is essential to ensure that fluency is maintained.

Steve Hill is a speech coach from the UK ; he has a number of websites including:
