What types of therapy are available to parents of young children who have a stammer? To hear your child stammer can be truly heartbreaking and extremely worrying. Parents often start to question as to how or why the child has started to stammer and will be eager to find a solution.
It can be very difficult to teach a young person any form of speech therapy technique. Techniques which would be extremely beneficial to teenagers and adults can be quite hard to understand for someone so young. This only adds to the frustration of the parent who can certainly see how and why the treatment could work but do not want to wait until their sibling is of an age to understand.
I personally feel that it is the parent who should be teaching the fluency techniques to their child and that any speech coach should actually be coaching the parents who then pass on the stuttering therapies to their child.
These stuttering treatments should be tailored directly to suit the age of the child therefore for the very young children who stammer they could well be in the form of a game.
The speech coach, stuttering speciaist or speech therapist should be happy to provide a continued support service as this is essential in ensuring that the child has the best possible chance of overcoming their stammer.
